Marcus Pitts, CCIM, and Justin Lossner, CCIM, both of JLL in Des Moines, Iowa, took distinctly different career paths after graduating from the University of Northern Iowa in 2003. Pitts became a specialist in industrial properties, and Lossner specialized in the office market, each
working at different companies for many years. One thing they did have in common throughout their careers — becoming CCIMs.
“CCIM has played just a hugely central role to all of our work,” says Lossner, who is also the current CCIM Iowa Chapter president. “Having attended all these national [CCIM] conferences, the exposure to ongoing education and unparalleled networking has been really eye-opening for me the
last couple years,” he adds.
Pitts and Lossner recently represented an undisclosed lessee in the $13 million lease of a 162,500-sf industrial property in Ankeny, Iowa. Since leading the JLL Iowa office in 2014, they have closed over 350 transactions together. “Once we joined forces at JLL, it was a pretty good yin and yang,” Pitts says.
When asked about the importance of CCIM education, Pitts believes “the designations are important, and when you have that CCIM designation after your name, you know the person that you’re working with. They understand the numbers. They understand commercial real
estate. They have some experience. They’ve had some deals.” Pitts and Lossner are firm believers in furthering real estate education beyond college, so they push their younger brokers to do the same. Lossner mentions “it’s something that we almost mandate from our brokers who are on our team, to get
accomplished and become a CCIM.” Pitts says that he and Lossner see CCIM Institute as “a very valuable tool — from the networking, to being able to understand the financials on a deal, to being able to advise a client — those are all things you learn through the education at CCIM.”
