From Marine to Market Leader: How The CCIM Institute Helped James McCraw Elevate His Commercial Real Estate Career
For Memphis native James McCraw, CCIM, the path from the U.S. Marine Corps to commercial real estate was guided by a simple philosophy: “If you’re doing anything, go all the way.” That mindset ultimately led him to earn his CCIM Designation—a milestone he calls one of the most meaningful achievements of his career.
A Mission for Mastery
After eight years in commercial real estate, McCraw knew he wanted to stand out in his field. Early in his brokerage career, he researched The CCIM Institute and realized the Designation represented more than a credential—it was a commitment to excellence. “The brokers I looked up to were all CCIMs,” he said. “If I was going to be serious about helping my clients and being the best broker I could be, this was the way to do it.”
He began his coursework in 2018, but like many, the pandemic disrupted his plans. McCraw paused his progress until in-person classes resumed, preferring hands-on learning. Once he returned, his focus sharpened: “I completed CI 103 and CI 104 and took the exam within about six months. When I got that Pin, it all came full circle.”
Lessons That Last
For McCraw, the educational impact of The CCIM Institute’s Designation program was twofold—academic rigor and real-world connection. “I enjoyed CI 103 the most,” he said. “It gave me an ‘aha’ moment about how I could better serve my retail clients.” He continues to revisit tools like Site To Do Business to refine his approach and add value to his clients.
Equally powerful was the network he built along the way. “The people you meet through CCIM—those relationships are incredible. My classmates and I still text regularly, and we’ve referred business back and forth.” Those bonds have evolved into lasting friendships and deal-making opportunities that extend beyond Memphis.
Guided by Mentors and Chapter Support
McCraw credits several leaders in his market with inspiring his journey, including Shawn Massey, CCIM, CRRP, ALC, a longtime retail broker and former chapter president. “He’s someone I’ve always looked up to,” McCraw shared. He also acknowledged Jamie Henson, CCIM, and Cherie Ganesh, CCIM, for their encouragement and guidance through portfolio submission and chapter involvement.
Even before earning his Pin, McCraw remained active in the Memphis Chapter. “I’ve always believed in staying involved,” he said. That commitment has paid off—he currently serves as Education Chair and will assume the role of President-Elect next year, leading the chapter in 2027. “The chapter has given me so much support. It’s important to give back.”
Rooted in Community
Outside of real estate, McCraw is deeply engaged in his hometown. He leads the Descendants of Early Settlers of Shelby County, serves with Leadership Memphis, and cherishes his city’s collaborative brokerage community. “Memphis is a secondary market, so you learn to work together. When brokers work together, the city grows.”
From serving his country to serving his clients, James McCraw’s career reflects the same dedication to discipline, community, and continuous improvement that defines both the Marine Corps and The CCIM Institute.
Investing in the Future – Why Membership Still Matters
While McCraw values the education he’s received, he sees the CCIM journey as ongoing. “Even though the classes are over, the learning never stops,” he said. “Markets evolve, and if you don’t keep learning, you fall behind.” He’s particularly excited about updates to CI 102 and continued opportunities for professional growth.
At the heart of his motivation remains a familiar principle from his Marine days: earning your title. “When someone sees that CCIM after your name, they know you’ve been through it. You’ve earned it,” McCraw said.
McCraw’s journey is a reminder: investing in yourself doesn’t stop after you earn the Pin. Staying connected through active membership with The CCIM Institute ensures that the knowledge, network, and support that helped elevate your career will keep you moving forward.
