What separates a good CRE professional from a great one? It isn’t one deal, one title, or one career move.

During Beyond the Deal: The Mindset of Top Performers in Commercial Real Estate, moderator Bo Barron, CCIM and CEO, Barron Commercial Group, led a candid conversation with Adam Palmer, CCIM, 2026 Global President of The CCIM Institute, Saadia Sheikh, CCIM, SIOR, MBA, Global President, SIOR, and Brad Ahrens, CCIM, Co-Founder, HearthStone Capital, about what it really takes to build a lasting career in commercial real estate, and it came down to four powerful words:

                                               Commitment. Capability. Courage. Confidence.

Success Isn't a Straight Line

The panel got real about the moments that test a career.

From changing firms and building new teams to moving from brokerage into development, navigating rejection and staying committed when market conditions shift. The panelists shared the decisions that required them to move forward, sometimes before they felt completely ready. The key message? Confidence doesn't always come first. Sometimes you build it by taking the leap.

Resilience also took center stage. Rejection, changing markets, and difficult projects are part of the business. What matters is the ability to learn, adjust, and keep moving.

“You always have to be sharp. You always have to be confident and strategic about every decision, whether it's on behalf of you or your clients, because you might not yet realize the impact that it's going to have.”

Adam Palmer, CCIM, 2026 Global President, The CCIM Institute

Build the Career That Can Adapt

Looking ahead, the conversation turned to what CRE professionals will need to stay competitive. As AI continues to disrupt how business gets done, it's the judgment, the ethics, the problem-solving skills and human expertise that will remain essential. As well as knowing when you need other people around you.

The panel explored how the right teams, partnerships and platforms can expand capabilities, open new opportunities, and help professionals scale beyond what they could accomplish alone.

For anyone thinking about their next move in CRE, the takeaway was powerful: Make the commitment. Build the capability. Have the courage to move. Protect your confidence. The biggest opportunities in this business aren't always found in the deals you close. Sometimes they're found in the professional you become along the way.

Conversations like this are exactly why being in the room matters.
