Airports as City Centers

Frictionless connectivity of goods to buyers and people to ideas will give rise to the aerotropolis, a city built around an airport. John D. Kasarda and Greg Lindsay explore this notion and its implications in their book, Aerotropolis: The Way We’ll Live Next. According to the authors, the aerotropolis thrives when businesses can seamlessly plug into an airport’s logistics network. “Airports are noisy and filthy,” they admit, but that won’t prevent more of these planned cities from popping up across the globe. Greg Lindsay will speak at the CCIM Live! conference in October. The book costs $30.

The Multipurpose Outlet

FastMac’s U-Socket eases outlet competition by combining two USB ports with a standard duplex AC outlet. The ports are compatible with the iPad, iPhone, Blackberry, and other devices with USB power cords. Owners won’t pay for unused electricity because the U-Socket cuts power to the ports when they are not in use. The U-Socket costs $22.95.

Giving Wireless a Boost

Internal wireless Internet cards keep Web users tethered to an invisible signal range, which typically isn’t very wide. The BearExtender, a business-card-sized Wi-Fi signal booster, increases that range by up to four times its original reach. The device, which can double as an Internet card, connects to PC and Mac laptops via a USB cable. The BearExtender costs $44.97.
