Buying Into the Process

A message from the global president of CCIM Institute.

This spring, we celebrated the 103 commercial real estate professionals who successfully passed their comprehensive exam, earning their CCIM designations and joining the global CCIM community.

It’s a special time — of joy, of pride, and of accomplishment — and the start of a new chapter in their careers with the CCIM lapel pin on full display. I’m excited to see what the future holds for each of them empowered by their CCIM education and the institute’s global community.

But passing the exam is just the beginning. Whether you’re fresh off the comp exam or have been a CCIM for decades, you earn the power of the pin every day — one valuation at a time, one counsel at a time, one deal at a time, and one client at a time. You earn it every single time you run out on that field.

It reminds me of a philosophy long held by Nick Saban, the legendary football coach who has led the University of Alabama since 2007. He calls it buying into “the process.”

I’m paraphrasing, but he says, “You make the jersey better, not the other way around. You have to earn the right to wear that jersey with every single play out there on the field.”

Buying into Saban’s process is simple: each member of the team gives 100 percent effort, 100 percent of the time. Period.

It’s just like a deal in our industry. You can’t just be really good at your chosen craft some of the time; you have to give 100 percent effort on 100 percent of your deals. Period.

And if you do that deal after deal and do it enough times, exceptional things happen. That’s what “the process” is all about.

That pin, the crimson red jersey — for those who wear either — you’re representing the team and the brand. For CCIMs, it’s a brand that holds incredible value and comes with an expectation of excellence. You’re part of a global team of CRE pros who represent the very best in expertise, experience, and ethics.

This is why people have looked to the pin for over 50 years. And the institute is here to support you every step of the way with timely resources and tools, like Commercial Investment Real Estate magazine and companion podcast.
